The golf short game area at the Cambridge Golf and Conference Centre
The short game is the part of golf that most golfers neglect, yet 80% of golf is played within a 100 yards of the flag. In golf, if you play a confident short game and can chip and lob the ball well, extract yourself from a bunker and sink your putts, your long game only needs to get you within range of the hole, wherever the ball lands in relation to the green. Playing well near the hole gives you a distinct advantage over most of your golfing opponents who will spend the majority of their practice time on the driving range.
The short game area at the Cambridge Golf and Conference Centre is built to enable you to practice your chipping, putting, pitch shots, bunker shots and lob shots. These are the shots that you need to master if you are serious about improving your golfing handicap. The short game area contains multiple tee stations, a water feature and a variable depth bunker large enough for 8 people.

Designed to make the putting greens react like a USGA (United States Golf Association) spec green, our new facility enables golfers to practice all the types of shots they may have to play within 50 yards of the green and when on the putting surface. Our greens are synthetic which means you can use them all year round and they are hard wearing and self-draining. Furthermore, realising that no two putting greens are alike, our variable gradient putting green allows you to practice putts taking into account different slopes.
We have installed a water feature to encourage golfers to work on their lob shots, so they can really practice getting the ball high into the air. Having water in front of you means that you cannot cheat and play a chip and run where in, for example, 30 yards, the ball is airborne for 10 yards and runs along the ground for 20 yards as the ball will end up in the water. Instead, you can work on getting the ball airborne quickly, getting it to arc high and land softly so it only travels a short distance on the ground, setting you up for an easy putt.
The short game golf course facilities are fully floodlit and open until 11pm 7 days a week to allow golfers to continue practicing after dark. You can even use the short game area in the long evenings in the middle of winter and the greens will be perfect and well-lit.
Putting all these features at your fingertips means CGCC hosts one of the best golf short game facilities in the world, right here in Cambridge, UK.
As an added bonus, the short game area is just outside Abbots Sports Bar and Restaurant and is overlooked by a deck area for relaxing, drinking and watching. You can order food from the bar and practice your putting while you wait for your meal to arrive.
